Tibetan Buddha
| One of the most usual spiritual paths that is in the news today is Buddhism - practiced by everyone from teenagers to celebrities - but just what is Tibetan Buddhism? The answer to "What is Tibetan Buddhism?" is not something that may be explained in a word, or even a paragraph. Buddhism is a very wide spiritual practice, with all subdivisions and types of Buddhism having the same goal - to reach Nirvana. This is the state of being totally free of all impediments to enlightenment, meaning you are free of all hateful thoughts, desires, worldly obsessions and negativity. At this time, you will enter a state of bliss that is beyond comprehensible statement - attaining Nirvana. In Tibetan Buddhism, three types of Buddhist devotions are taught in order to exercise the rules and rituals that will help you attain this extreme state of bliss. They are Hinayana, Mahayana and Vajrayana - but primarily, Tibetan Buddhism is considered to be Mahayana Buddhism. This means that the uttermost goal of all exercises and meditations is to attain the state of Buddhahood, and then to help other living beings also reach this state. The name for the motivation of this exercise of Buddhism is "Bodhichitta", which means "mind of enlightenment". Another way to define what is Tibetan Buddhism is to explain the four schools of Buddhism taught in this country. The basi is Nyingma (The Ancient Ones) - the oldest school of Buddhism, which is primarily focalized on the exercise of meditation. The second is Kagyu (Oral Tradition) - there are a few subsects in this school, which deals with meditation as an experience and ritual to test one's self. The Sakya (Grey Earth) represents the most scholarly tradition of any of the schools, and the Geluk (Yellow Hats) is perchance the most well known Tibetan Buddhist sect, headed by the Dalai Lama. The popularity of Buddhism in Tibet was mainly increased by a number of monasteries that were started in the country for the duration of the 16th century. It is approximated that for the duration of the time amount of time amidst the 16th century and 1959, when Tibet was invaded, over 25% of the population of Tibet were monks. The most primary monastery today, at least by Western standards, is the Drepung Monastery, home to the Dalai Lama. What is Tibetan Buddhism? While Buddhism itself is already a perplexed idea to grasp, the Tibetan form is even more elaborated and intricate, taking years of study to totally understand.

what does sino-tibetan mean? I'm attempting to write a reasearch paper on a buddha sculpture that is of "Sino-Tibetan style" and I may not find anything explaining what Sino-Tibetan is. As already stated, "Sino" refers to China and Tibetan of course to Tibet. As a compound, the word Sino-Tibetan might have three dissimilar meanings: 1. An umbrella term for Chinese and Tibetan similar phenomena, such as Sino-Tibetan languages, which primarily comprises of Sinitic (the dissimilar Chinese languages) and Tibeto-Burman (Tibetan, Burmese and a lot of little languages in the Himalayas and other constituents of Asia) languages, similar to the term Indo-European languages, which comprises of Indic and European languages. Not all linguists agree that Chinese and Tibetan languages are at all related. If we talk when it comes to culture and art, the term Sino-Tibetan is highly problematic, since Tibetan art and culture is much more influenced from India and Central Asia than from China. This leads us to the second meaning: 2. Tibetan arts and crafts have influences from both India (to a more outstanding degree) and China (to a lesser degree). Thus, we might call objects that show more Indian influences "Indo-Tibetan" and objects that show more Chinese influences "Sino-Tibetan". Indo-Tibetan is likewise a term very often times used regarding the religion of Tibet together with it is Indian origins and background. If we look at art specifically, the faces and bodies in Tibetan art are ordinarily more Indian in style (as are in truth at least the the Buddha statues in Chinese art too), but oftentimes things in the background of paintings (like buildings) are more influenced by Chinese style, and clothes might have dissimilar styles (Indian, Chinese, Mongolian or indigenous Tibetan). 3. Thirdly, the term Sino-Tibetan might on occasion refer to the borderlands amidst Tibet and China, mainly the region called Amdo in Tibetan, Qinghai in Chinese, where Chinese and Tibetans have lived side by side for centuries (contrary to central Tibet around Lhasa, where there were almost no Chinese living before the Chinese invasion in 1950/51), and the arts and craft thence on occasion show a much more inviolable influence from Chinese culture. This is of course also the main reason behind the second meaning above. |
