Is there a metal antiquing or oxidizing solution for home use for crafters?

I have respective non-precious metal charms and jewelry conclusions I would like to oxidize so they are darker and not shiny. Metals include brass, copper, bronze, nickel, tin, tibet silver, pewter, etc.

The oxidizers I have found seem to be marketed towards professional jewelers and for gold and silver, and have hazmat warnings.
For the battery charger method, are there any instructions online? It sounds interesting, but the description is mixing up and I have no experience with using electricity for metalwork.

Make an electrolizer.ie attach the negative of a little battery charger to the object to be oxidized/put it in a tub of water (or if in a hurry mild lye solution then stick a positive electrode(not the clamp as it will ruin it) in the water and plug it (the battery charger) in.As long as it doesn't bubble ferociously (to huge a battery charger) just wait till it is corroded to your liking
