Removing piston sleeves with heat? This is in a 4 cylinder gas tractor, with a 4" bore. I built a sleeve puller from a lot of 3/8" x 2" flat stock and a threaded rod, but it's not budging. The top "bridge" percentage of my puller just bends. Can I use a good deal of heat (rosebud tip or welding tip from an O/A, or running a few beads of weld from a mig down the sleeve) to loosen the sleeves? Its the crud on the outside of the sleeve in the water jacket that's keeping it in place. Assuming you are replacing the sleeves you could weld it and shrink the sleeve but most likely they will still need the puller or a press. I employed a 1" thick by 4.5" wide block cut round to match the sleeve (bottom end cut with a rabbit to catch the sleeve, can't be more spectacular than the outside of the sleeve). And a 1" x 2.5" bar for the top but a little longer than the sleeve with galore stand-off blocks to clear the sleeve. Used 1/2" all-thread to go between. It takes rather a bit of strength to get them out but once you get them past the 1/2" lip they come out very easy. You may also tighten this puller and use a brass drift to drive the bottom up but be careful you don't slip off and harm something underneath. Good luck! |
