Religious Statue
| The lax and prevailing sentiment by which this truth is opposed, is the following. Religious covenants are not formally, but only materially binding. They have no real obligation in themselves, but we are bound to the duties therein, because these duties are required in the moral law. This dangerous opinion appears to be imbibed by a lot of professed witnesses for the Covenanted Reformation, by the influence of which, they seem to be precipitated into the gulf of public apostasy from these principles, which they formerly espoused. It is totally unlikely for a person to believe it, without agreeably diverting a mystery contempt of religious vows, oaths and covenants; and it is totally unlikely for him to act upon it, without being involved in a practical opposition to them... If this sentiment were true, the house of Israel and the house of Judah could not be charged with breaking the covenant: they might be charged with breaking the Lord's law; but he could not have said, they have broken my covenant. If Israel's covenant with God did not bind them, by an intrinsic obligation, their iniquity could not be a breach of the covenant, but only a transgression of the law; nor could it be any way criminal from the relation it had to the covenant, but only from the reference it had to the law. We may without apparent effort know what to think of an opinion, which inevitably renders the charges the Lord brings versus His backsliding people, ridiculous and unjust - Were this sentiment true, there could be no such thing amongst the children of men, as the sins of perfidy, covenant-breaking or perjury. Though we may pledge our veracity, by religious promises and vows unto God, if there is no obligation in them, there may be no perfidy, or breach of faith in our irrespective them. Though we may join ourselves to the Lord in a solemn covenant, if that deed brings us under no obligation to fulfill it, the sin of covenant-breaking may have no existence. Though we will have to enter into an oath to walk in the Lord's law, if this oath is not binding in itself, how may the sin of perjury, or despising the oath of God, be charged upon us. We are sure that these sins are brought up in the Word of God, and that they are devoted by men; but this sentiment destroys them eternally - Were this sentiment right, then all the solemn acts of believers as individuals, and of the church as a body, are rendered void and useless to all purposes and purposes. Of what use are promises, vows, oaths and covenants, if there is no obligation in them? If obligation to performance is refused to them, their very essence is destroyed. The mind cannot think on any of those dealings without giving careful consideration to an obligation to do as we have said, vowed or sworn as necessary to their being. Promises, without an obligation to fulfill them, vows, without an obligation to recompense them, oaths, without an obligation to carry out them, and covenants, without an obligation to keep them, are monsters both in divinity, and in morals, which are developed by this more monstrous sentiment - It is likewise the native import of this doctrine, that Christians are underneath no other obligation to duty, after they have promised, vowed and sworn unto the Lord, or covenanted with him, than they were before they engaged in these solemn and holy transactions. The man who may believe this, there is outstanding reason to fear, is actuated by a desire to break the bands of the Lord and His anointed, and to cast away their cords from him. These things both show the gross error of this sentiment, and serve to assert the truth of the contrary doctrine.

Another name for a religious(catholic) statue is a what? I forgot the name. please help Figurine, Figure, Sculpture, Statuette, or Icon? Or a Sacramental? + Graven Images + A little girl kneels besides her bed saying her nightly prayers. Is the little girl kneeling to the bed? Is the bed an idol? Of course not, the little girl is kneeling and praying to God. A family bows their heads and prays over their evening meal. Is the family bowing to their food? Is this feed an idol? Of course not, the family is bowing and praying to God. A mother kneels in prayer before a cross and prays that her son in Afghanistan will be safe. Is the mother kneeling to the cross? Is the cross an idol? Of course not, the mother is kneeling and praying to God. Do you have pictures of your loved ones? Have you ever looked at the picture of an individual while talking on the phone to them? Is the picture an idol? Statues, pictures, and symbols of humans we love are not idols. Statues, pictures, and symbols of Jesus and the saints are just like pictures of the persons we love and respect. The King James Version of the Bible states in Exodus 20:4: "Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven effigy or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the world beneath, or that is in the water underneath the earth" Why were the Jews commanded not to make graven images? Graven images were the frequent method of pagan worship. They were representations of untrue gods. This is a very clear command. However God commanded the Jews in Exodus 25:18 and 1 Chronicles 28:18–19, "And thou shalt make two cherubims of gold, of beaten work shalt thou make them" And in 1 Kings chapter 7 Solomon made bulls and other images out of precious metals. It seems evident that the Jews did not worship the cherubims and Solomon did not worship the bulls he had made. These images did not violate the command of God. Therefore, an effigy not made for worship is acceptable. In Numbers 21:8-9, "And the LORD said to Moses, "Make a seraph and mount it on a pole, and if any individual who has been bitten looks at it, he will recover." Moses consequently made a bronze serpent and mounted it on a pole, and whenever any individual who had been bitten by a serpent looked at the bronze serpent, he recovered." And in John 3:14-15, Jesus says in correlation, "And just as Moses lifted up the [image of a] serpent in the desert, so will have to the Son of Man be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life." How may a statue of our Lord Jesus Christ dead on the cross be considered an idol to a untrue god? A crucifix is the message of the Gospel without words held up for all to see, a visual reminder of the sacrifice of Jesus, no dissimilar from a painting, a play, or a movie. How may a nativity set set up in your house to perpetually remind you and instruct your children of God's love for us be idolatry? Catholics do not worship statues but the almighty God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. With love in Christ. |
