| Libertarian Presidential Candidate of 1996 and 2000, the late Harry Browne and author of How I Found Freedom In An Unfree World, believed that finding freedom was having little impact done alone than altering society. Browne wrote that there are only two number of things from which only one can be chosen in reaching your goal: the direct and the indirect alternatives. His major premise in his book, found in chapter six, "The Group Trap," is that an person does not need to modify others to find freedom. It may be done alone. The direct substitute requires only direct action by myself for the desired result. The indirect substitute requires me to find others to support in achieving the desired goal. The direct substitute means that only one person has to alter his or her thinking and actions, while the indirect substitute means finding a way to modify the thinking and actions of others. He gives the example of having to fight higher taxes. Using the indirect alternative, I must enlist the joint operation of others to join in a political crusade to lower taxes. The direct alternative, in contrast , means I find a (legal) way to stay clear from paying high taxes. Another example would be a club with sure rules and actions that are no longer to my liking. The indirect substitute would require me to change the minds of other members in order to change the rules and actions of the club. The direct substitute would be to quit the club and find a new club I like better. Another example would be a college student using the indirect substitute by attempting to use student government to modify the curriculum or tuition, or using the direct alternative, the student could just find a better school . Browne believed that it is much having little impact to use the direct substitute in attaining goals than to use the indirect alternative. He wrote, "This principle applies whether the group comprises of you and one other person or you and thousands of others. In each case, your goals intended to be attained and plans are diluted as they merge with those of other members of the group." Despite this evident point, persons mechanically think in terms of the indirect number of things from which only one can be chosen to achieve change. But this, he says is useless, because it is based on remaking others. A free person rather looks at a circumstance and asks, "Is this what I want for myself." If yes, then there is no problem. If no, then the free person mechanically thinks of a direct alternative, taking obligation for the desired goal, and searching for ways to fetch the necessitated change. "A free man," Browne wrote, "doesn't need groups, because he's in a position to take vantage of the a lot of direct number of things from which only one can be chosen that require only his decision, not the altering of others." I believe he was right. I was not happy with my job. I surely could not fire half the faculty. I wasn't the principal, plus he was basi on my list to go. I had to find my own way. Wanting others to change for your sake is futile. It's the way of the serf. As Ezra Pound wrote, "A slave is one who waits for an individual to come and free him." I'm no longer a serf; I changed myself and my life. You may too.

Does any individual know an Orthodox Christian Priest who supports Interfaith Marriage? My boyfriend and I are dissimilar religions and would like to get married. I am Muslim and he is Coptic Orthodox. I have found a sheikh that supports interfaith marriage (for both men and women) we are just looking to see if we may find an Orthodox Priest (not inevitably Coptic) who supports it also. So far we have only come all over Priests that aid inter-church marriage. Your support or direction would be mainly appreciated. Islam distinctively accepts interfaith marriage with Christians and Jews. My father's Muslim and my mom is Lutheran, for example. But the Orthodox Church is very strongly versus interfaith marriage. Even if there is an Orthodox priest who sees no problem with it, he will not marry you because his bishop might excommunicate him. Part of the reason is because marriage is a sacrament, and sacraments are not to be given to non-Christians. |
