| As widely known, the original Australian gold rush was initiated by Edward Hargraves who in 1851, disappointed by the California gold rush, found gold at home in Australia, baptizing the spot Ohir. It had a bad effect on the other trades, on working ethics. Laborers left their ordinary jobs to join the diggers, agriculture was deeply affected. The fee scheme led to a lot of police corruption. The tension among authorities and the diggers led to killings, like in the case of the stockade. Racism became also share of the equation. The forty thousand Chinese working in the fields were threatening challengers due to their exemplary working habits. Greed and self-interest asked for their removal. But overall, the gold rush meant the creation of a new nation with a innovative economy. In the end, gold bullion remunerated off!

Why are persons saying tonight starts a new decade? The decade still has one year left in it? 2010 has to be finish before the decade ends. 2010 is only beginning. A decade is a ten-year amount of time that begins with the beginning of a year ending in 1 and concludes with the end of the year ending in 0. For any person that says "well, it's a ten-year amount of time with similar characteristics," you could say that 1995 to 2005 was a "decade" too, but that wouldn't make it any more unfeigned in terms of how English-speaking humans refer to decades. Rick, you are correct. We do not start out counting anything with zero. The introductory year was ONE. Thus the introductory century was 1 - 100, the second century was 101 - 200, the third was 201 - 300, etc. This century will be 2001 - 2100. Why do you think this is the 21st century? Here's a hint: look at what the last year of it will be. Rick, you are the only one here who is thinking logically! Do persons in truth feel it is natural for a year that ends with a 9 be considered the 10th year??? |
