How to Grow the Sacred Lotus or NelumboThe Lotus or Nelumbo are amongst the most pretty and best known plants for the garden pond. They are not frost-hardy and only grow well outdoors in tropical and sub-tropical regions. In temperate areas, even where there is no winter frost, they are best cultivated with the shelter of a greenhouse or conservatory. There are a lot of dissimilar Lotus, a good deal of of which require a big pond, but others that are rather happy growing in a tub on the patio or balcony. Nelumbo nucifera is the famous Sacred Lotus. This gives rise to finelooking pink blossoms on long strong stems among large, flat, plate-like foliage, which may be up to 6 feet tall. ok now i had put a lotus seed in my aquarium a year go and had thought it was history but now i spotted it? its started to germinate and all but the plantlet is red in color with 2 tiny leafs and a root is this color ok or is it not , i think it is something to do with the type of lotus but anyways now it is in an aquarium with 25 'degree celcius and this aquarium has water plant fertilizer in stead of gravel and there are other plants too is this ok for the plant or does it need warmer conditions? Most pond plants that germinate do not invest in filling the leaves with chlorophyll at primary because they are deep beneath the surface where the optimal light for chlorophyll based photosynthesis is not reaching. So yes the color will be normal until the leaves get started the reach the surface. But the other answerer is rectify in asking what your plans are. Lotus are best grown out doors where they have big surface areas for their leaves. If you have a huge tank - and I mean industrial sized - then they might grow with mediocre showings and I doubt you would get any flowers - which will be short lived anyways. I suggest germinating it in the tank then moving it to a water garden in the spring where you may get enjoyment from it and it will be healthy. |
