Kosher Mezuzah
| A Mezuzah is a parchment affixed to each doorway in the home (except bathrooms and closets) based on the commandment in Deuteronomy 6:9. Written by hand on the parchment are two passages from the Torah: Shema Yisrael (Deuteronomy 6:9) and Vehaya im shamo'a (Deuteronomy 11:21). The introductory is a declaration of the unity of God and our total commitment to Him, while the second proclaims that the fate of the Jewish persons depends on it is dedication to the Torah. Hallow Your Home The symbolism is clear: we must hallow our homes and workplaces as places where God is ever-present and where we utilize His design for how the world must be. Together the two passages affirm that this home will be filled with the spirit of dedication to God, that the younger generation in it will be brought up to honor the Torah and keep it is mitzvahs and that all that happens to us comes from God and is affected by our spiritual endeavors. This mitzvah ensures that whenever we enter or leave our house we encounter God's name, prompting us to realize that everything in the world is temporal except the service of God, which lasts evermore and always. A Mitzvah With a Touch of Artistry The Mezuzah is held in a closed case to protect it. Although the essence of the mitzvah is the klaf (i.e. the scroll), because the mitzvah of Mezuzah is so cherished and kosher mezuzah scrolls are prepared so meticulously, Jews often times house them in finely crafted cases embellished with artistic designs. Over the ages designing and fabricating Mezuzah cases has been elevated to an art form. Mezuzahs are formulated from an endless assortment of materials, from silver and precious metals, to wood, stone, ceramics and pewter. In fact, the beauty of a heap of of these cases has led a good deal of to forget that the essential part of the Mezuzah is the parchment. Some dealers of Mezuzah cases trade a mere copy of the text that has been photocopied onto paper, but only a leather parchment written by a qualified sofer is halachically valid. Write it Right A sofer, or ritual scribe, will have to be religiously observant, have exemplary reputation and be welleducated in regards to the laws of sofrut. After learning the halachic intricacies of sofrut the sofer-in-training in general does an apprenticeship (shimush) beneath an expert scribe. By the time a sofer writes his original Mezuzah he has quintessentially expended over a year learning the trade.

Where may I buy a kosher mezuzah in the Springfield, Missouri area? I have been calling for to buy a kosher mezuzah for the past few months now, but I am altogether at a loss with regards to where to even search for one in the Springfield, Missouri area. I tried looking on ebay, etc.. but I am not sure how much I may trust that they are kosher, and most venders are retail either the case only, and not the actual mezuzah or vice versa. Help, please?!
