When attempting to put together a solid timeline of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA), you have to go back to the early church at the point when the 12 Apostles were in charge of it, directly. They would go though the towns and countries spreading the Good News and would come upon little communities where persons would come together in little groups and study the works of Jesus. They would communally work on the call to conversion. This was being done at a time when persecution was very mutual place and most of the players in this knew they faced and their conversion would demand possible martyrdom.

After the original 100 years of the church the conversion routine and the Initiation routine begun to have some form to it. This was the very beginning of the catechumenate, a routine that is still employed to this day. The conversion of Gentiles was very comprehensive as to make sure that each person understood the Judeo Christian culture, teachings and history. St. Justin spoke on this and it was followed in the Apostolic Tradition of Hippolytus.

As we moved to the 3rd and 4th centuries, the procedure had formulated into a three year program. During this time Constantine made Christianity legal in 315 and that saw huge numbers of nominees begin into the process, however, the system was not wholly formulated and had very little control over it. By the 5th century the catechumenate started out to go by the way side. The need for conversion in Europe was no longer necessitated as oftentimes and may children were being baptized as infants.

The lack of a Catechumenate caused both the Dominican Order, named for St Dominic and the Augustinians, named for St. Augustine to both start out the routine to re establish the catechumenate. They did not like the exercise of baptisms occurring for the duration of mass. In 1538 there was an Episcopal conference. During this group discussion these two groups asked that the pastors return to the missionary principles and return to missionary principle of the early church and reestablish the catechumenate. It was unsuccessful. The routine stayed as it was all the way up through the early 20th century.

In the early 1900s there was a revival moment to re-add the Catechumenate to the procedure of conversion. In France there were galore troubles because of the number of non practicing Catholics. And in African, it was very evident that they were working in a missionary capacity and necessitated to build the Catholic Church from the ground up just as the early Christians did by going to little communities.

Whether the success of the French and African programs or just the acknowledgement that working within little groups makes for a more successful situation, Vatican II took up the cause of the Catechumenate, and called for it to e reinstated. The Bishops by overpowering majority reinstated and restored the catechumenate. The vote was 2,165-9-1. By 1966 a temporary rite was handed out to all the parishes outlining the procedure and a secondary version was handed out in 1969 and by 1972 the Catechumenate was back and instated in parishes and by 1986 the US Bishops were mandating that this rite be enforced in ALL US Parishes and gave a nation plan of how to do it. By 1988 it was wholly in place.

From 1988 altho present the routine has been evolving. In 2000 the Bishops again visited the subject only to find that may parishes were not actually fleshing out the program . But in spite of the tepid reception of the program and it is installation, the Bishop to date have refused to alter the program. They feel it is very important to the community for conversion of the entire parish.

If a person is not accepted into the Catholic Church?

If "someone" is not confirmed into the Catholic Church - what denomination is similar without all the red tape? This person does not want to feel injure or judged by the church she is a fellow member of ever again. Is it Episcopal? Do they actually have a good deal of similar ways of worship like the rosary, the creed, & other catholic customs?
To Deep Thought: One can not be confirmed into the Catholic Church until they have been through RCIA classes. She already did the classes...And one cannot receive Eucharist until they are confirmed. It is not like other Christian churches where any individual who is baptized is welcome to the Lords Supper.
SUSANNA LIVES: what church do you go to? Thanks for all of your outstanding answers!

rejoice and be Thankful :-) The only true/real reason to belong to a church is because the church and the pastor instruct & exercise only what the Bible teaches. The Bible says "Earnestly contend for the faith that was delivered to the saints of old" Jude 3. The Bible describes this "faith" as the authenti faith of the Christian in Rev. 14:12 "Here is the forbearance of the saints. Here are they that keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus" The commandments and Jesus' teachings are the center of the church and must be upheld.
A God of Love warns us with an everlasting Love that we have a choice to make. Will we stand on the Word of God (on safe ground) or will we follow the dictates of humane beings?
Amazingly, a great deal of of the most prominent doctrines of Protestantism today are not found in the Bible at all. They have been brought into the Protestant churches by the mother church of Rome, who received them from paganism. A few of these untrue teachings are that:

A. The law of God has been ameliorated or repealed.
God's law may never be changed or repealed (Luke 16:17).

B. The soul is immortal.
The Bible mentions "soul" and "spirit" 1,700 times. Not once is either referred to as immortal. People are mortal (Job 4:17), and none receive immortality until Jesus' second advent (1 Corinthians 15:51-54).

C. Sinners burn evermore in hell.
The Bible teaches that sinners will be wholly consumed (put out of existence), both soul and body, in the fire (Matthew 10:28). An eternal hell of torment is not taught in the Bible.

D. Baptism by immersion is not necessary.
Baptism by immersion is the only baptism recognized by Scripture.

E. Sunday is God's holy day.
The Bible teaches, without question, that God's holy day is the seventh-day Sabbath--Saturday

Note: These untrue teachings, once believed, tend to fetch "confusion" (which is what the term "Babylon" in a literal sense means) and make understanding Scripture much more difficult.

A Sobering Thought
It's sobering to think that a good deal of might unknowingly be drinking Babylon's wine. Perhaps this is all new to you. If so, please ask God to guide you (Matthew 7:7). Then search the Scriptures to see if these things are so (Acts 17:11). Promise that you will follow where Jesus leads, and He will not permit you to end up in error (John 7:17).
