How does one cut a diamond ? If diamonds are known to be the most difficult occurring natural substance ....how does one cut a diamond ? Would it require the use of another diamond which may not have sufficient hardness to effect cutting but rather be diminished itself ? Are there artificial methods of diamond cutting ? If so , what, and what was applied antecedently ? Diamonds lately a seldom cut. Despite the use of the word "cut" diamonds are commonly ground down using discs embedded with fine diamond grit. (Most diamonds that are mined are not jewelry grade and are crushed for industrial use.) It is true that diamonds are hard to scratch but it is untrue that they a "strong." They may be crushed reasonably easily. Jewelry grade diamonds that are big sufficient to cut to give rise to assorted littler diamonds may be cut with lasers. Or fractured. Experienced jewelers study a diamond and may find a plane where the diamond will fracture cleanly. A little chisel and little hammer and lots of training and precision were the established way to "cut" diamonds and the method is still applied widely. (There was an ad showing the smoothness of a car's ride that showed a jeweler fracturing a diamond with a chisel while cruising down a rough road.) But as I said most "cutting" is genuinely by grinding, very few diamonds get split into littler ones. There is a market for oversized polished diamonds too big for use as jewelry. THe grit devised by grinding is of a heap of value and conservatively accumulated for future use. (A note. There are synthetics that are harder than diamonds and lately 2 naturally occurring solid homogeneous inorgani substances have been found that are harder than diamonds.) |
