Did God give hope or courage to idolatry by having Moses fabricate the bronze serpant for people to look upon? In Numbers 21:8–9, "the LORD said to Moses, "Make a saraph and mount it on a pole, and if any person who has been bitten looks at it, he will recover." Moses consequently made a bronze serpent and mounted it on a pole, and whenever any individual who had been bitten by a serpent looked at the bronze serpent, he recovered." Did God give hope or courage to idolatry by having the Israelites look upon an object in order to be healed? Isn't the saraph on the pole a graven image? How is this any dissimilar from a crucifix, which is a figure of Jesus on the cross? God told Moses to have the serpent made and mounted on the pole and the humans will have to look on it and be healed. However, the people did not honor it, they just looked on it in obeisance to what God told Moses. We may make an effigy to represent Jesus . . . There is no temptation to believe that the effigy is the person. It's only a reminder. We don't even honor the effigy itself, but the person it represents. |
