One of the 12 apostles, St. Thaddeus, also known as Saint Jew, (not to be confused with Judas Iscariot), was martyred while spreading the Gospel. It is considered as an apostle of the Armenian Church worshiped. Legend has it that a church was dedicated to him built the first time at the current location in 68 AD.
Not much seems to be the original church, which was extensively rebuilt in 1329 after an earthquake destroyed the structure to continue in 1319th, however, some of the parties surrounding the altar from the 10th Century.
Most of the current structure dates from the early 19th century, half as Prince Abbas Mirza Qajar, including with renovations and repairs. The 19th Century Carved additions are made of sandstone. The oldest parts are black and white stone, to Turkish names Kara Kilise, the Black church.

In July 2008, the Monastery San Tadeo in the World Heritage List of UNESCO has been registered with the monastery and chapel of San Esteban Dzordzor (two other Armenian monuments in the province of the situation.)
The Apostles Thaddeus and Bartholomew traveled to Armenia in 45 to preach the word of God. Many people were converted and numerous Christian communities were established there in secret.
He died around this time Abgar, after ruling for 38 years and the Armenian kingdom split in two. His son was crowned Ananun in Edessa, while his nephew ruled Sanatruk Armenia. About 66 AD, was the Ananun to kill St. Thaddeus in Edessa. The Sandokht princess who had converted to Christianity was martyred with Thaddeus. His Grave is near the Ghara Kelisa.
